A day course to enthuse and inform you of easier and time saving ways to grow great food.
(This day course is aimed at adults but it is available to book for interested children aged 11 to 18. The cost is £97.50 and you can buy a child’s place here. Please email Nicola at [email protected] with the names and ages of the children so we can welcome them when they arrive.)
There is plenty to see in the garden at this time of year. We check progress of various experiments, including the two beds of dig/no dig. Undercover, the Polytunnel is now being cleared of summer plantings and salad transplants for the winter are going in.
You will learn a vast amount in one day, about all aspects of growing for food, and gardening generally. These courses open the door to your growing more food in less time, and with more enjoyment.
Part of the course is about compost making, using the examples of my composting process here. Which ingredients are good to use, in what proportions, how big a heap to have, whether it needs to get hot, how long to leave it and whether turning is worthwhile. Then a look at assessing the readiness of compost, when to spread it and how to deal with the weed seeds.
In addition, we look at other types of compost and the best ones to buy, plus how long you may or may not need to keep them in a heap before spreading.
I explain the details of surface composting to feed both soil and plants for a whole year. In one dressing and with no other plant feeds needed.
In the greenhouse I demonstrate the value of becoming skilled at propagation, how little space you actually need to grow hundreds of plants at a time, and thousands over the season (should you need to!). We look at module trays, compost, sowing methods and suggest best timings.
You learn time saving tips in many aspects of growing, from watering and plant care, to less weeding, and increased harvests in relation to the time and space given. Yield per square metre is a key goal, to save time and effort.
The course includes tea and coffee and a tasty lunch of many vegetarian dishes made with produce from the garden.
Just wanted to thank you for the inspiration to experiment with no-dig, as I’ve tried it with amazing success in my container veg garden.
This is our first year of no dig and we are the envy of our fellow allotmenteers.

I made the mistake of straying from your advice, and I tried “amending” my clay heavy soil in areas instead of continuing to add on compost with no-dig. This winter we’ve had a lot of rain and the only bed that has not flooded is the bed I left as no-dig! Now I know that digging around helps nothing, certainly not drainage. My no-dig bed absorbs the water like its nothing.

Thank you so much for all the practical information, the exceptional food and the general sense of can-do, my favourite advice of all being ‘Alleviate your worries!’ I spent several enjoyable hours renovating a neglected bed of raspberries using compost and polythene, a job so daunting I had put it off for months. Am feeling very empowered.

I started this method four years ago and I wish I’d known about it decades earlier. We had just bought a big rototiller to start all of our beds before I discovered no dig and ended up selling it. This method works very, very well and for very little effort or money.

I started no dig after coming across Charles’ You Tube videos and deciding to give the weed supression “hocus pocus” a go with some well rotted compost I had. I spread this on some rose beds and another flower bed that would take me a total of about 3 hours to weed once a month, prolific deep weeds on a heavy clay base. I could not believe the results. Weeds did come up but 15 mins of hoeing and all gone and now hardly any….plus the roses and plants looked the best they have for seven years. I was totally bitten!!!

@charles_dowding has changed my life! I tried for so many years to grow veg, read loads of books and just made a lot of slugs very happy. In 2016 I decided to give it one last try before packing it in. I religiously followed his book, sticking to exactly the varieties he recommended. I followed his sowing times on the monthly Newsletter and the difference in what I can grow has been phenomenal! Having regular pickings of salads like this at this time of year used to be a far off dream!
