The wood is especially fine and smooth, making the dibber easy to use. Compared with the use of short dibbers, there is less back-bending, thanks to a 66cm/26in length. Handle length is 13cm/5in.
We have made the end round rather than pointed. This works better for no dig where the surface is a soft mulch, and you can make a hole for plants with their roots nestling to the compost below. Even so, best make the hole a little deeper than plant roots, partly to ensure a good planting depth with all stems buried, and partly to ensure sufficient width, so that the root system of plug plants is not damaged while being pushed into the hole. If modules are fatter than the dibber diameter, wiggle while pushing in, to widen the hole.
I use a dibber for all plug/module plants, garlic, broad beans and small potato seed: it’s my go-to tool for planting, also for drawing lines in the surface compost, more quickly than using strings.
