A fun day and plenty to learn. Using examples of the many heaps at Homeacres, I demonstrate and explain all stages of composting in detail.

Suitable ingredients, a range of possible methods to use, heap size, hot or cold and what happens at different temperatures, cover or not, how long before turning and is turning necessary, how long before using, tools such as thermometer and aerator, and whether it’s possible to reduce rats in heaps.

We look at bought composts too, for perspective, and to learn what happens with different processes.

Also we delve into heaps of horse and cow manure at varying stages of decomposition, including the greenhouse hotbed which will recently have been moved (turned) to it’s summer location.

We shall check progress in the new land and see how the different mulches are working.
