Lorna Ward

Benalla, Victoria

My new raised no-dig garden beds have been in production this spring and summer ‘down under’.  Currently growing in the beds are tomatoes, lettuce, capsicums, spring onions, Italian parsley, cantaloupe, green beans, rocket, cucumber, zucchini, beetroot, basil, silver beet, chives, radishes and mint.

To begin we mixed some soil with pea straw, horse manure, our own compost, and worm castings for the original beds. In the autumn we will add a new layer of compost.

Our summers are hot with temperatures between 30 degrees and 40 degrees in the middle of most days. I mulch the plants with pea straw to protect young plants.
