Phil Gibbs

Steeple Claydon, near Buckingham

Steeple Claydon allotments have been in existence for over 70 years.

The plot had not been touched for 2 years or more, I chose this area because the ground had not been disturbed for some time.

The soil is of heavy clay as is referenced in the village name Steeple Claydon. I took over the tenancy of this plot in December 2024 the first thing I done was to erect 4 x 1m cubed compost bins. Since then, I have started to prepare my no dig beds and we have now got four beds nearly completed each one has a dividing path of wood chip and is made up of 10 cm mushroom compost topped with 4-5 centimetres of general-purpose compost.

I was born within the village boundary, and I’ve lived here all my life that’s over 70 years. My area is surrounded by some very experienced and committed gardeners. If I can promote Charles Dowding's no dig gardening to this allotment society, I would feel I’ve made a mark, and I am looking forward to the challenge and we’ll keep you informed.
