After starting gardening in containers during the pandemic on my small apartment balcony in Pennsylvania, I was lucky enough to get a 20' x 20' community garden plot after moving to San Diego. Here I was finally able to put into practice what I had been learning about no-dig gardening from Charles' videos over the past few years.
Due to the many different garden critters that we have (gophers and squirrels being the most abundant!) I decided to build raised beds lined with hardware cloth to protect the produce as much as possible. No-dig has worked great in these.
It has been a wonderful learning journey and I've been able to grow some delicious produce...sungold cherry tomatoes, fava beans (first time ever eating them!), scarlet runner beans, sugar cube cantaloupe, purple cauliflower and leeks have been my favorites so far.
Each season brings new learnings and I have enjoyed sharing Charles' no-dig information with fellow new gardeners as well. I hope to get to meet more no-dig gardeners in Southern California!
