I wrote this book in 2006, six years before moving to Homeacres, and that feels a long time ago. In these last 20 years, I have learned so much more about soil and vegetables, and discovered so many methods for best soil care, successful cropping and easier composting.

As a result of this, my original attempt to revise the book transformed it into two volumes of significant size. The second volume will appear in October 2027.

In this first volume, I reveal a range of techniques for growing organic crops, starting with details on how to improve soil fertility and enhance soil structure. I explain in depth the value of a no dig approach, and why it works so well. Compared to my original book, there is much more about the hidden biology of soil.

I then take you through the exciting range of gardening jobs, from sowing seeds and making compost, to companion planting and tackling pests and disease. I advise how you can grow abundant food even in small spaces, and in addition to the why and how of no dig gardening, I explore ways to grow more food using new energy methods such as electroculture and sowing by the moon.

The book also has recent results from the experiments I run here. And it is is filled with beautiful photos from this gorgeous garden in Somerset.

Volume 2 will be a compendium of how to grow a wide range of vegetables. It will have advice for making the most of no dig soil in order to enjoy a healthy abundance through all four seasons.
